Addressing the RAAC Crisis in UK Schools: A Temporary Solution is at Hand

At the time of writing, it’s been over a year since the reinforced autoclaved aerated concrete (Raac) crisis first emerged. Schools and sixth form college buildings around the UK are still waiting for their turn in the government-led school rebuilding programme (SRP), from a long list of 518 academic institutions.
The current rate of delivery is around 50 per year, meaning some could be waiting for a very long time.
The impact of RAAC on schools
The range of implications on school buildings and uninterrupted learning for pupils vary from minor to severe. In most instances, it has led to the closure of some classrooms, administration buildings and dining spaces. However, A recent BBC investigation found that Raac hit facilities has caused complete displacement of students in some areas, with one even having to move to a wedding venue just so they can continue teaching. It is impossible to maintain a safe and conducive learning environment in such circumstances.

Addressing the RAAC crisis with a temporary building
Based on a revision to Schedule 2 of the General Permitted Development Order (GDPO), Class CB allows schools affected by RAAC to erect temporary structures without the need for submitting a planning application to the local planning authority.
Nevertheless, schools are required to inform the local planning authorities and the appropriate fire and rescue authorities a minimum of eight weeks before the construction of temporary buildings starts on site.
To school governors, trustees, headteachers, and local councillors, the RAAC crisis may seem insurmountable at first glance. However, with proactive planning and by choosing rapid temporary building solutions like those provided by Spaciotempo, you can ensure that your students’ education continues in a safe and effective manner.
